Deer and bunny playing. Might make you smile.
The deer is having so much fun. Here's more on the story. So yesterday I did a major clean of the rabbitry.
Took me the entire day to wash cages, move bunnies and such like. MAN I was tired at the end of the day. :) Rabbits look good, cages smell great! Everything is all hunky dory again. Usually I do it over the course of three-four days, but needed to get this job done so I just kept plugging away at it. Bunnies enjoyed being out on the grass as i worked though. :) The Ili Pika, formally known as Ochotona iliensis, was discovered by conservationist Li Weidong in 1983, who named it after his hometown.
The animals can only be found in the Tianshan mountain range in the Xinjiang region of northwestern China, and its territory is under threat, with the population rapidly declining. BUT apparently some Netherlands have an acrobatic streak to them... hmm.. a brand new year is upon us. T'is the time to make new year's resoluations and what not isn't it? Well, sorry to tell you this but.. I don't make new year's resoluations. They are too easy to break or to forget about. But I will tell you what I hope to accomplish this year with my rabbits. 1. continue breeding my holland lops and to work on reproductivity issues. 2. continue breeding my polish, hopefully getting a buck that will work well in my herd and be an aggressive breeder. 3. increase the size of my commercial type does. Right now a couple of my does are smaller than I would like them to be, and one is nervous nellie. Planning to replace both does with better offspring. 4. get better lights in the rabbitry. 5. fix the leak in the shed roof. 6. build a new more carriers, making one a guinea pig ready carrier. 7. put up a tin roof on the rabbit tents, and put sides on that will be sturdier than the tarp is. Not sure what I will use for that but I'll figure something out for it. :) May this season, may this day, be one filled with the delight and hope we have in the Lord Jesus. Come to bring us back us to God.
May the thump of furry feet and the joy of squeaking voices remind you of the grace bestowed upon every single day. :) Merry Christmas all and thanks for a good year! Yesterday it was my pleasure to drive a rabbit up to a new breeder of polish. I am hopeful I can get him to come out to some rabbit shows, particularly to Forest City next June. HEY! Our next show is June 27, 2015. Start planning now!!! :) I also had a gal stop in to look at my commercial bunnies. She thoroughly enjoyed looking at the kits from J and Poppet. She found it hard to decide which one she wanted to bring home with her. She did buy the cage that I had up for sale though, so she's already. She'll be back again another time to look at the bunnies and make a decision. I think she said she's already built her an exercise area already too. That will be nice for Miss Bunny. Anyways, we had quite a good conversation about rabbits. We talked health issues, and love of bunnies and just a bit of everything. We had fun chatting and she'll be back again. :)
This week I got my hay for the winter. It's a real variety of grasses this year. I got it from a lady up Clinton way. I only picked up 12 bales this year. I figured that would be enough since I've cut the herd size down and I have some hay left from last year. I do sell it by the slice so if people want hay I'm happy to sell them some. I sell it for $5 a slice so I think that's considerably better than they sell it for in the store. :) Helps me save up to pay for my hay next year too! :) Makes sense eh? The rabbits seem to like it and the guinea pigs really like it so that's good all round I think. Anyways, I've been keeping busy. I've got some spinach and lettuce growing for fall greens for the critters, and I've been pulling weeds everywhere. Got me a couple of huge piles out in the backyard, I plan to take them to the dump this coming week, then we'll be spreading out dirt over the backyard to make it more smooth and hopefully having a friend come up and get some for their backyard as well. I've gotten the shed mostly organized for the winter as well. Looks pretty good so far eh? I am planning to make some of my own carriers next year so the wire I have will be put to good use. :) I may have Joyce at Bunnyview make the bottoms for me, but we'll see, I'm not sure yet how I will make it all work out. And I'm keeping some wire in case I need to make a new 36in cage. I'm still hoping to sell the rat cage that I have here. Time enough for that though.
Having rabbits means having rabbit waste to dispose of. Ergo the need for a composter (or some folks just do a poop pile). My preference is to have things contained (also my hubby's preference). I had thought about making a screen front as i did last time, as well as making two stand alone composters, but the middle skid is an especially heavy skid that I thought, why not see if I can't make it as a complete unit. Low and behold I could! It's also painted and I'm not sure if that means anything. But it's good and heavy and was at the "for free" pile at the Rona, so I figure it can't be worth too much if anything (or they'd send it back for the dollars right)? So anywho.. I got it in there and it's holding nicely. As you can see I'm using ZIPTIEs to hold it all together. I needed to get the black ones as they are meant for outdoor use. The fellow at RONA said it's important to make that distinction. Most of the time I put one up top and one on the bottom, but in a couple of places I put one in the middle as well. Particularly around the middle support. I usually had to join three together but twice I could use just two to connect the skids, and once I had to use four. Hubby came by and said "good job hun". Made me feel good to hear those words. :) I put it to work immediately. I put in all the stuff I'd be collecting for the past week or so. It's well mixed now. It's also now got some leaves in it that collected over the winter. I placed it right next to the shed. I like how the composter is well away from the rabbits this time. hopefully that will keep the fly population down a bit. I plan to put up some lemonade jars for the flies as well. That should help get rid of a few more of them. :)

AuthorI have been breeding rabbits for a quite a few years. I thoroughly enjoy them as animals and think they make great pets. I also like to take some of them to rabbit shows to see how they measure up to the standards. For the BEST rabbit forum I've ever found. Go to Rabbittalk.com. Good for the pet rabbit owner as well as the breeder for meat or show.
