Saying Good-Bye To Peek

1/30/2015

Picture
Peek-A-Mommy was my son's rabbit.

She's been a great rabbit for him.   She had plenty of babies for him until she had one bad litter and we thought she'd die.  We managed to pull her through and retired her to being a pet bunny.
Picture
don't hate me for the messy cage, it was cleaned after the pic was taken and then we'd gotten busy....
She earned her name because as a kit she was raised in the house and she would constantly set down under the edge of the cage and then poke her head up over and then quickly duck it down.  It was like she was playing peek a boo.  My son had wanted to call her mommy mommy but it quickly changed to Peek-a-mommy because of her cute behaviours.
Picture
She spend a lot of time outside until this past summer since we gained a neighbourhood hawk that was taken out most of our dove population.     Most of the time she spent it in a cage, but we could also let her hop about.

Over this past year her health started to seriously fade.  She would have days where she wouldn't eat her pellets and would only nibble on hay, the only way I got her eat to was giving her fresh feed (green feed).   I told my lad in November she most likely won't make it through the winter..   Cosy hidey box or not.
Picture
Winter can be hard on bunnies.

She's gotten a bit thin the last month or so .. flat on one side, fat on the other.. we knew she had a lump of some sort within, and over this past week she developed a lump under her jaw.

I had planned to cull her this morning.... as she just wasn't looking good yesterday but just couldn't bring myself to do it so. " I said.. One more night girlie", and this morning she was gone.

She'll be buried come spring in  a hole I have dug out back.

It's been a rip-snotter of a busy week

5/3/2013

It's been a busy week, got LOTS done.

The guinea pigs have been moved outside!  WOOT WOOT.  All except for Kettle.  She's too young to go with the boar yet.  I've been rotating the girls as to who gets to stay inside with her.  Amazingly none of them are volunteering...they want to be outside munching on lovely delicious grass all day long... not babysitting the baby.  :)   Ah well... they will survive.
Picture
This of course meant that Miss Peek-a-mommy had to give up her outdoors digs so she's now moved inside again.   She's somewhat unimpressed by this.  Giving her a ton of fresh cut grass today helped to make up for that though.
Picture
AeroBar has moved back to his original home.     Jim has kinda given up on getting his does to breed to his blue-eyed white buck they kept refusing him, so he said I gotta get these does bred so he asked if he could buy him back.  I said sure.    I'm hoping i didn't jump the gun as I don't know if Beethoven is fertile yet, I'm just hoping he is.  :)
Picture
What else?   Oh!  I'm getting my garden planted.  the buns will be happy with these leftovers: carrots, swiss chard, spinach, prickly lettuce, basil, various lettuces, radish greens, turnip greens and so much more.  :)

Oh and today I brought my Slippers home.  Slip spent the winter in cosy comfort at a friends house.  She wasn't appreciating the cold winter all that much as she is my oldest girlie.   She's now home and safely living in her old/new digs.     It's good to have her home again.  :)

Peek-a-mommy x Spots - Feb 13, 2013

2/13/2013

Picture
Thought I'd give my son's rabbit one more kick at the can for a litter, but won't be doing that anymore.   Peek had one VERY large dead kit last night.  She's just not going to make a momma rabbit anymore.   Keeping two unproductive rabbits is not going to be a huge issue around here.  :)

Peek-a-mommy gets a present

12/24/2012

Picture
She won't leave it...not even for grain.... (her total fav).
Picture
Peek is kept in one of my outside cages since she needs to lose some weight and exercise and limited feed (And I don't like giving one rabbit grain and having the one in the next cage begging and not getting it).
I need to tarp them to make sure no snow gets inside, but a wee bit of snow won't hurt a big bunny. :)
BUT Peek is a bunny who likes to snuggle and the cat litter box wasn't cutting it for her.  SO.. since tomorrow is Christmas and bins are relatively inexpensive right now she got a Christmas present.  :)

Animal Husbandry - nails and tattoos

7/24/2012

Picture
Today I made some animals happy and irritated... :)

e. Rosie pictured above (named by the lad next door) was SO easy to tattoo and nail clip.   She's a bit of a flightier bunny (not crazy just more prone to stand back with head up for flight)... but she was such a dollie.
Picture
Whereas Peek-a-mommy, my son's pet rabbit.  uncharacteristically had a major cow!   To the extent that she escaped from me!   Crazy girlie.  Normally she's as calm as a peach but today.. well... miss crazy pants.  Thinking there had to be reason I checked her for signs of breeding readiness and voila~  She got a date with Shade. :)  She'll be much calmer now by evening.
Picture
I did make a couple of goofs.  Miss Sally (above) is now going to be called Naomi, and Miss Naomi is now going to be call  Sally.   Not a real big deal.. but I went with for tattoos (since I have an easy tatt and therefore have some flexibility in tattooing), the first two letters of their names.  (this just for the most part I was flexible since Marilla got MR instead of MA since Marie got MA.    Anyways, I'll stop rambling here.
Picture
Soldier got his first ever "date" today.  I matched him up with Gina (black doe from Ally).  Hoping to see results in another 31 days.   I also bred Peek, Shake and Anaka.    Anaka is currently raising a litter, but has two WEE kits left with her.  She's not stressed at all and for the past two days has been Miss hormonal queen.   This should settle her down and help her to focus on doing her current job of raising kits instead of running around saying Look at me. aren't I pretty??   Silly silly silly doe.  :)

I have been breeding rabbits for a quite a few years.  I thoroughly enjoy them as animals and think they make great pets.  I also like to take some of them to rabbit shows to see how they measure up to the standards.

For the BEST rabbit forum I've ever found.  Go to Rabbittalk.com.  Good for the pet rabbit owner as well as the breeder for meat or show.
