Peppy and PinPin

7/29/2014

Last year I sold a gal a young rabbit with a over cleaned ear.  She lives in London in a LOVELY apartment and wanted a nice house pet.   I sold her a lad that I thought would make her a great pet and he did.

She contacted me about two months ago wondering if I might have a possible companion for her Peppy.

Picture

We talked abit about the pros and cons of different bunnies I had available, and I recommended PinPin to her.  PinPin always one of my favourite girls, quiet shy lass who would sit nicely for a good pet, just not cut out for being a mom.   So off PinPin went to her home.  Below is one of her ready to go a new home pictures.

This is her now;

Getting Peppy and PinPin to get along was a trifle problematic... And PinPin had some troubles overcoming her shyness, but she's apparently coming out of her shell quite nicely.

Allow me to let her owner tell you their story.  :)

There was about 5 weeks of them living separately (getting fixed and healing, then getting used to Peppy etc). Her cage was partially in front the of the bedroom door, so they had constant contact, as well she had full access to the bedroom from pretty much day one. Litter training her was easy...here is a box, and she has always used it.  Every day they had time together, and inevitably Peppy would get her irritated and I would give her a rest back in our room. But time went on, more and more out time and her (and our) patience paid off!  :) They spent most of their days laying on opposite sides of the fence getting used to each other.
Picture
But Peppy never strayed far and was always back at the gate before long. He is also a real sucky and loves to be kissed and snuggled, she would come over to the gate during these displays and watch, I think this went far towards her wanting this attention too and overcoming her shyness. So now she will accept quite a bit of pets and kisses before she bolts.  lol

All told she was awesome with him, she was far more interested in exploring. She is coming to tolerate his affection, as this is what I think it is maybe vs domination. If she is to just sit still and let him snuggle next to her he is finally happy. It is just getting her to accept it and in the end like it.

First kisses and eating side by side, eventually leads to this:

And so two bunnies lie content.  isn't that what we all want???  :)  PinPin has found the home that she needed, Peppy has found a good companion, and I am just so very very pleased.  :)

New Composter Built

7/10/2014

Having rabbits means having rabbit waste to dispose of.   Ergo the need for a composter (or some folks just do a poop pile).  My preference is to have things contained (also my hubby's preference).
Picture
I had thought about making a screen front as i did last time, as well as making two stand alone composters, but the middle skid is an especially heavy skid that I thought, why not see if I can't make it as a complete unit.  Low and behold I could!   It's also painted and I'm not sure if that means anything.  But it's good and heavy and was at the "for free" pile at the Rona, so I figure it can't be worth too much if anything (or they'd send it back for the dollars right)?   So anywho.. I got it in there and it's holding nicely.
Picture
As you can see I'm using ZIPTIEs to hold it all together.  I needed to get the black ones as they are meant for outdoor use.  The fellow at RONA said it's important to make that distinction.   Most of the time I put one up top and one on the bottom, but in a couple of places I put one in the middle as well.  Particularly around the middle support.   I usually had to join three together but twice I could use just two to connect the skids, and once I had to use four.    Hubby came by and said "good job hun".  Made me feel good to hear those words.  :)
Picture
I put it to work immediately.  I put in all the stuff I'd be collecting for the past week or so.  It's well mixed now.  It's also now got some leaves in it that collected over the winter.  I placed it right next to the shed.
Picture
I like how the composter is well away from the rabbits this time.  hopefully that will keep the fly population down a bit.  I plan to put up some lemonade jars for the flies as well.  That should help get rid of a few more of them.  :)

S'mores & Honey-Buns

7/9/2014

I am from K___________ and my girls and I purchased a pair of Holland Lops from you in May. For some reason I don't have your direct email address saved in my phone but I wanted to give you an update. We love love love our bunnies! They have been traveling with us back and forth to the trailer in G_________________ with ease. The girls handle them and play with them daily so have turned into well mannered little fellows. Although I haven't mastered clipping their nails, I am mastering this bunny thing pretty good I think.

Questions People Ask: How do I get my doe to breed?

7/4/2014

Picture
So let's say you have a rabbit, or two, that you want to get bred.  You are having difficulty doing so.   What tricks can you use to help them breed?   This is a question often posed to me so I thought I'd take the time to answer it.

FIRST!  Make sure your doe is in good health.  No fat, no abscesses, or injuries to feet or anything like that.
Be checking for signs of readiness.  A pale or white vent usually indicates no desire to breed.   Red or purple...better sign.

My Tricks.
  • Daily introduce doe to buck for one week.  Every day, once in the morning, once at night.  Some does breed at different times of the day.
  • Switch the does cage with the bucks cage.   Leave her in for a couple of days then introduce her to the buck.
  • Add apple cider vinegar to the water (about a tsp or so) to an average water bottle.
  • Take for a trip away...does will often breed after they've been for a car ride (or within two days of being at a new location).
  • Change cages randomly with another doe.
  • House between two male rabbits that she can smell but not get peed on.
  • Tease her a bit by running fingers along her back, particularly near her tail.
  • Run with a buck for two-three weeks in a big cage (I use a 4 x 4 cage
  • Exercise the rabbits (running rabbits on grass can be an effective way of getting them in the mood)
  • You get the odd doe that won't breed unless you bring the buck to her.  NOTE: be careful doing this.  Some does will attack a buck  going into her space so be prepared.   It's a matter of knowing your rabbits.

Tricks others have used:
  • Table breed
  • Tie a string to rabbits tail to get it up out of the way so you can move it to help lift the doe for breeding.
  •  Add wheat germ as a topper to the pellets.
  • Sheer determination.. bring doe to buck every single day.

Things to note for your records:
1. difficult breeder and how you solved
2. if continues to be a difficult breeder consider this: do you want to add that tendency to your herd?

What methods have you used to get slow to breed does to breed?

I have been breeding rabbits for a quite a few years.  I thoroughly enjoy them as animals and think they make great pets.  I also like to take some of them to rabbit shows to see how they measure up to the standards.
