Builds a perfectly good nest and then kindles outside the box in three different places.
Litter of five dead kits. Logos gets one more kick at the can before being sold to a pet home. I'm about done with this doe.
Builds a perfectly good nest and then kindles outside the box in three different places. Here's a good read for you.
Something in here to think about where you own pets or you breed them. :) Check it out here. So Logos is due sometime in the next week or so (if she got bred) during her tenure with Corbin. So tonight I brought her in the house and put her in the old guinea pig cages we still have downstairs. These are roomy 4 x 2 cages so she should be happy in there. She's getting grumpy and very snippy with her next door neighbour so I thought she just might be preggers (I hope so). Lost this little darling this morning. She was fine when I first went out to do chores, went into the house to get water, came out to hear a slight squeal and saw her in the water bowl with a doe on top of her. Seems she did a water bowl jump just as her foster mom did the same thing. End result... kit with a broken back. This was a heart breaking loss. She was such a nice little dollie.... good legs/hips/ear set everything nice about her.... Total bummer.
I have a migraine. Therefore I am not taking pictures of the babies tonight. Hopefully my head will be a better place tomorrow and I can get on that. Also I weaned the oldest kits tonight. They should be ready to move to new homes at the end of the week if all goes well. :) So I'm not sure what was going on with Miss Triscuit that yesterday.
She's normally an inquisitive girlie, quiet but curious about my goings on. She's currently raising a litter of 10 kits. (well, 9 as I fostered the runt out). So I came in to clean the board, and said good morning girlie as she was sitting in the corner of her cage instead of coming to the front that she always does. She's a curious lass this daughter of Biscuit. Very quiet, likes to know what's going on much like her momma that way she is. Doesn't raise a fuss about anything unless she's "DYING" of starvation (aka food bowl empty). Anyways, I said hi and she squeaked at me. I backed away as I was a bit startled by that and then came closer again and she's just squeak/squealing at me. Not acting upset or anything. Just quietly sitting the corner squeak/squealing at me. Every time I turned around to look at her she did the same thing. Lasted an hour. Tonight when I came in to do chores I almost expected it again, but nope. Just a curious gal gazing at me from the corner. Still not coming to the door so not sure what's up with that. By all appearances she doesn't have a thing wrong with her so I'm a bit stumped. Just not a normal thing to have happening is all.... I just thought it was the oddest thing Came home tonight to five kits from Biscuit. :) They will be chestnut and red I think, though white is a possibility as well. Watch Me GrowThis wee runt of Jilly's litter managed somehow to break it's leg. Don't know how. I know when... four days ago it was sitting real quiet in the corner of the cage and I picked it up saying Hey baby what's up with you sitting so quiet. And then saw it had a broken leg. When I put it down it was all perky again, just not using the leg so I said, we'll see how you go. Where the break is generally heals well on bunnies, particularly babies. i had my son give it a careful look over tonight to see if he could figure out where the break was and he spotted right away once I gave him the right baby to look at. See how the back leg is somewhat swollen half way down? It's always been the tiny one of the litter and the leg hasn't taken a whole lot off him, he's still the same size comparison that he should be to the others in the litter. The one he's pictured with in this picture is the next smallest up from it. And this is about where I expect this kit to be in comparison. So we'll continue to wait and see how the wee one does. It's always a gamble with the runts to see how they do.
I just wish I knew how the kit managed to hurt itself. Don't much want kits being able to do this to themselves. Not had it happen before so I'm a tad bit curious about it. I had one too many peanuts born today. I'm not happy when peanuts are born. I know they will die. The two above are from Georgia.
The thing is... in polish .. you are NOT supposed to get peanuts. They come because people have foolishly bred netherland dwarfs into the lines in the past. Polish as a large breed rabbit selectively bred down to a smaller size. They are not true dwarf rabbits and so peanuts should NOT be occurring. Fortunately most peanuts born in the winter I find dead. I don't have to make the choice... kill them quickly or take a wait and see approach. Most peanuts die within the first two days of life, the occasional one will linger on a while. I tend to not let them linger as I don't believe in causing unnecessary suffering to any animal big or small. They can eat, but not well. They can't compete with stronger litter mates very well as their hind legs function not so good, and their big heads weight them down improperly. Those that do mature live to about six months or so.. and tend to have digestive issues. Why would I wish that on any rabbit??? Some breeders will pet out, sell or terminally cull any rabbit that gives them peanuts, others like me just try to winnow it out of our lines slowly. But it's a hard process as you may think you have it gone only to have it pop up again. Seems a losing battle. If one culls everything then one has to start over again and there's no guarantee that it won't pop up in your new rabbits. So I tent to take a wait and see approach, it's just another strike against a nice young doe. :( 11 kits born. 10 big, 1 runt. Runt fostered to polish litter. will be a litter of white and chestnut. Watch Me GrowFive babies born. Two Peanuts. Two broken, one solid. Mom made a poor nest, kits were chilled, stuck them in with Carma's litter to warm up and brought them in the house for the afternoon. Will divide litter for evening chores and keep them warm with Carma's tonight again. :) This is Miss Georgia's second litter and the lack of care given this litter (and complete failure with the first) doesn't bode well for her longevity in my herd. AuthorI have been breeding rabbits for a quite a few years. I thoroughly enjoy them as animals and think they make great pets. I also like to take some of them to rabbit shows to see how they measure up to the standards. For the BEST rabbit forum I've ever found. Go to Rabbittalk.com. Good for the pet rabbit owner as well as the breeder for meat or show.
