Rabbit Disease Alert

11/26/2012

A rather nasty rabbit disease has been found in the USA.

It can and will wipe out 50-90% of your herd.

For more information go here.    This speaks of the how the disease is changing in Spain, but it's been in Utah as well so be mindful folks.

it's called  Variant Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus.

Consider this, if rabbits vaccinated against are getting it...and now it's affecting the young rabbits and not just the old as it used to...it means that it has mutated.  Not particularly a virus that we really want to have mutate is it?

Symptoms
  • Usually sudden death in rabbits >6 weeks of age with hemorrhage from the body orifices, especially the nose and mouth    .
  • The acute form shows lethargy, pyrexia and death within 1-2 days.

Eight kits born.  Lost all but one.  Tried hard to save four that were well chilled but failed in that endeavor.   Looked like there had been one hard birthed kit (had bruising in the back end).   Saved one, fostered to Marilla.

four kits born, Marilla had made a wonderful nest three days ago, but failed to pull much fur when she actually HAD her kits.  They were quite cold when I found them.  Warmed them up, saved three.

Honesty in Pedigrees

11/23/2012

I recently bought a bun for a friend of mine.

She's a decent little bun and I think he'll like her.

But the person I bought her from mentioned he changed the pedigree to his own rabbitry name.    He mentioned this AFTER I had her loaded in my car and was ready to go.    It was like an after thought.  I had briefly paused to thank he again for selling the bun to my friend.

So I figured I'd contact the original breeder and ask about that.  The breeder recognized the doe but said it wasn't her doe, and she didn't recognize the buck at all.   And then gave me the name of the person who owned the doe and suggested I contact them.   I'm currently waiting to hear back.

So I"m thinking to myself... hmm..... what's going on here?   Just who is this young rabbit then?

I don't know.    I do know my friend will be happy with her regardless as she'll fit his needs nicely enough.   But I'm just ... annoyed would be a good word.

When one buys a pedigreed rabbit (a pedigree simply means you have a piece of paper listing all the parents and grandparents known for at least three generations).   Anyways, when you buy a rabbit like that...you leave the pedigree alone.  You don't go around changing the name on it.   You especially DO NOT remove the original breeders name and put your own on it.   If you don't like the name given to the rabbit, then give it a call name.   For instance I have a bunny name ATHP's Butterscotched.  I call her Scotch (that's her call name).  I've sold a bun that I names ATHP's DD1.  her new owner called her silhouette.    That works for me just fine.     She didn't change her "paper" name, she just used a name to identify her that she liked better.   NO biggie.

But to change a rabbits name...for instance from ATHP's Jaren to made up rabbitry name of Benny's Orin would be WRONG.    That's taking credit for another person's work.  It's at times making yourself look like a better breeder than what you are.   It's lying.    Plain and simple...it's lying.     So just don't go round doing it.  For me it means I'd be VERY hesitant to by from the breeder again unless the animal involved was an exceptional one.

this young fellow is a very pleasant young male. He's fun, easy to handle, and all round just a nice rabbit. Only reason to sell? bigger than his brother.

Vivian x Bandit

This extremely quiet young doe is a sweet young thing. Snuggles into you very nicely. She's a return from breeding kit, and has ended up being quiet shy.

Rockton Show, Nov 2012

11/17/2012

Just back from the Rockton show.  November 17, 2012

I took five rabbits, four polish, one harlequin

  • William did 1/4 (BOSV), 2/4. 2/4 (his competition was a delightful broken black that was very pretty)
  • Petey did 6/6. 5/6. 6/6 - he's quite a young senior and the others had filled out better.
  • QT did 2/5. 3/5. 3/5 (she had some stiff competition - the top three positions were different each time)
  • Keener did 4/4 , 4/4. 4/4.    She got lots of good comments about her head, but her fur was absolutely horrid - splotchy and out of condition that she just wasn't in her best form.

What a peanut looks like

11/16/2012

These two kits are from Rena.  They are Peanuts.  What that means is they received two dwarf genes.  This means that long term they don't have a good health prognosis.  The longest I've had a peanut survive is two weeks, the longest I've ever heard of a peanut survive is 8 months.   These two did not survive very long.

Peanuts have big heads, weak rear ends, low-ears and overall are not thrifty kits.

People either cull them fairly quickly or allow nature to take its course.  My style varies depending upon the kits.   Some kits do well despite their size, whereas others start to fade almost immediately.  I do not believe in allowing any animal to suffer so once they start to fade, I

These are the two normal kits of the litter.  do you see how they are stronger and healthier looking?

Sprite is a dad.  I'm still awaiting  a pedigree for him from Sydney over at LHB Farms.    He gave me four kits this morning, through Rena.   There are two peanuts in the mix which is too bad, but we have kits from Sprite!  WOOT WOOT!

Spots (above) in conjunction with Lisa, produce seven kits this afternoon.

Lisa is a very quiet, calm doe.  Spots is a solid nice buck.
I expect their kits to be much the same.

I have been breeding rabbits for a quite a few years.  I thoroughly enjoy them as animals and think they make great pets.  I also like to take some of them to rabbit shows to see how they measure up to the standards.
